Cpt. Hook and 4 Transients in the afternoon! May 1st, 2010.
We heard a report this morning that 5 Orcas had been seen near Sooke heading East. Despite a thorough search of the area in cooperation with another boat, we were unable to find the Orcas.
However, as we headed out in the afternoon we reminded all the boats heading out to be on the lookout for these Transients and sure enough they were spotted near Discovery Island! As we arrived on scene we immediately identifies Cpt. Hook (T40), a male Transient Orca that has a very distinctive dorsal fin.
We followed the Orcas as hey zig zagged up Haro Strait, obviously in hunting mode. In fact near he end of our trip we did see they make a kill!
Apart from the Orcas we also saw several Harbor Seals, a Bald Eagle and a lone Steller Sealion that was sat on the Kelp Reef marker. What a great way to start the month of May!
