Spectacular Wildlife on windy day. April 15th, 2008.

Harbor Seals

Dalls Porpoise

Bald Eagle

Northern Elephant Seal

On a blustery spring day we set out this afternoon with almost a full boat to explore the waters around Victoria. We had not been on the water long before we spotted a large number of harbor Seals near Discovery Island as well as a couple of Bald Eagles.

We then headed across Haro Strait to the San Juan Islands and as we neared Lime Kiln we spotted a lone Male Northern Elephant Seal (they can reach 4,500 lbs) in the water. The large proboscis (nose) that gives this seal its name, was clearly visible.

After the Elephant Seal ducked under the water we continued on our way and explored the waters around San Juan Island. We then headed across Boundary passage and as we neared the southern gulf islands came across a number of Dalls Porpoise. Our passengers were amazed at the speed and agility of these porpoise.

On our journey home near Oak Bay we saw another Bald Eagle and then yet another near Trial Island. So despite the wind and waves that made for an exciting journey, we had another incredible adventure on the Salish Sea.
