Evening encounter with a Humpback Whale! May 23rd, 2013

This evening we managed to find the Humpback Whale we had encountered earlier in the day! Although it had been over 3 hours since the last time anyone had been with the Whale, we managed to pick it up north of Kelp Reef:) It was a beautiful evening and wonderful to hear this large Baleen Whale blow loudly each time it surfaced in the still of the evening. On our way home we had another amazing encounter with the lone Coastal Wolf, this time on Chatham Island!

Humpback Whale in Haro Strait! May 23rd, 2013

Here are a few images from today's encounter with a Humpback Whale in Haro Strait! This articular Humpback Whale BCY0324 is known as "Big Mama" and was the first Humpback Whale sighted back in the Salish Sea 14 years ago. Humpback Whales had been wiped out of the area by the Whaling Stations in the area. We are now seeing an increasing number of Humpback Whales returning to the Salish Sea:) We also saw Harbor Seals, Harbor Porpoise and several Bald Eagles, including one causing havoc at the Chain Islets!!!

Transient Orcas in Haro Strait! May 21st, 2013

Here are a few images from a wonderful encounter with Transient Orcas in Haro Strait! Not long after we arrived on scene this morning we witnessed a kill by the Orcas, probably of a Harbor Seal. We could see the slick near the surface after the kill as the Orcas shared the carcass between them beneath the surface! Then they moved steadily south west throughout the day.
