Wonderful J-pod encounter! May 10, 2011
We had a wonderful encounter with Jpod today just off Salmon Bank!
When we arrived on scene the first Orca we came across was J2 "Granny" the oldest female Orca known, who is estimated to have been born in 1911. This makes her 100 years old this year!
On several occasions we turned off our engines and sat with our hydrophones in the water and heard some amazing vocalizations between the members of Jpod.
The highlight of the trip was watching a nursery group (a couple of adults with youngsters) playing near the beach. As we watched and listened it was breathtaking as the youngsters were playing around! We witnessed spyhops, cartwheels, Pectoral waves and general frolicking around:) The youngsters were being very vocal and as a passenger said, they sounded so happy!
It was an awesome day to be on the water:)
