T49A Transient Orcas near Friday Harbor! April 8th, 2013
Today we had a wonderful encounter with the T49A pod of Transient Orcas near Friday Harbor! We had received several reports of Transient Orcas being spotted around the area. Eventually we got a confirmed report that the T49A's had been spotted in San Juan Channel near Friday Harbor. As we headed out at 2pm we were not 100% sure what direction the Orcas would move but thankfully they stayed around Friday harbor and that is where we encountered them. Not long after we arrived we could see the three Orcas moving swiftly in a tide line and it looked like they were making a kill, possibly of a harbor Porpoise that had been spotted nearby. Then one of the Orcas made a dramatic Spyhop, the highlight of our tour:)
On our way home we stopped at Whale Rocks to show our guests a large number of Steller Sea Lions that were lounging on the rocks. It was a wonderful early spring day with lots of wildlife to be seen!
