Oct 20th, 2013 - Resident Orcas near Lime Kiln!

Early this morning we received a report that Resident Orcas could be heard calling on the hydrophone at Lime Kiln, on San Juan Island! We headed out at 2pm on one of our final tours of the season excited about the prospect of seeing our Resident Orcas and we were not disappointed:) As we arrived on scene just north of Lime Kiln we could see Resident Orcas in every direction we looked and soon realized we had a rare "Superpod" as all 80 plus SRKW's were in the area!!!
Our best part of the encounter was watching various members of L-pod who were in a very playful mode and we watched numerous tail slaps, a lunge, tail lobbing and even a wonderful cart wheel:) The members of L-pod we saw included L90 "Ballena" and L85 "Mystery".
On our way home we stopped off at the Chain Islets to let our guests see the hundreds of Harbor Seals that use these islands as a haul out area. We also saw a brief glimpse of some Dall's Porpoise and a couple of Harbor Porpoise.
It was another great day in the Salish Sea:)
