WOW! Today was up there with one of the best days ever! All three pods were traveling from Race Rocks together. We had just passed Discovery Island when we saw all of Jpod traveling towards us. We shut down and waited. The grouped passed very tightly infront of us. Dorsals dorsals and more dorsals - so many dorsals! It was a dorsal festival to say the least. We caught one more pass of Jpod, saw that J1 / Ruffles was traveling closely with his mother J1 / Granny and several others.

Then we moved down Haro Strait where we found a tight group of L25 moving in to fish at San Juan Island. Spy hops, tail slaps, breaches right before the boat (sorry but I have a record here for the most missed breach shots before me) however did catch some crazy airborne action going off a few hundred meters away - double breaches, cartwheels you name it. Finally the group dispearsed and went into their typical feeding pattern. When we left, L78 / Gaia (my first time seeing him) and L79 / Skana were hunting. AMAZING day.

Although I missed those breaches, (cause there was just SO much going on all around us) I managed to catch the end of them. To top it off, we heard there are 5 humpbacks near Race Rocks, and someone on the Wildcat boat managed to catch a triple breach this morning (meaning 3 humpbacks breaching together) !!! Can't wait to get back out there!

Today is Aug 6th and apparently our Southern Residents have left the area as of two days ago. It is thought that they have gone out west. Jim Dale (manager of 5 Star) says it is common for the SR to take off during the first week of August but why we do not know, nor do we know where they go.
