Resident Orcas off San Juan Island again! June 1st, 2013
We had another wonderful encounter with Resident Orcas (J & L-pod) off San Juan Island today. We first encountered the Resident Orcas near Andrew's Bay heading north in the morning and then at Turn Point in the afternoon. All day the Orcas were in a very playful mood with lots of Cartwheels, Spyhops, Tailslaps, Tail flukes and even several Breaches! We had a very special encounter with J8 "Spieden" as she led the way from Turn Point over to Pender Bluffs. J8 was born in 1933 (she is one of the oldest Resident Orcas) and is named after Spieden Island, where she was first spotted.
It was a great start to the month of June (Orca Month) and we left the Orcas just north of Turn Point hoping they would be back again tomorrow.
