J Pod, May 21 2007.

This afternoon we ventured out on Supercat and caught up with J Pod near Turn Point. Shortly after we arrived on scene our skipper, Trev, and Marine Mammal Researcher Ron Bates, noticed members of J Pod including J2 "Granny" and J 16 "Slick" with her new baby J42, were moving towards the north end of the San Juan Islands.
We observed this group of J Pod moving at considerable speed in a southerly direction. Our passengers were thrilled to see the new J Pod baby and mother. Then out of the blue we witnessed a cartwheel and then a full breach, which was a terrific surprise to all of us on board.
J2 "Granny", is the matriarch of J Pod and was born before the first world war. Resident Orcas (fish eating Orcas) live in family groups named Pods. J Pod is one of the three Southern Resident Pods, the other 2 being K Pod and L Pod.
