On Sunday, May 6, Five Star Whale Watching's passengers and crew saw the newest addition to J-pod. The new calf has been given the identification code "J-42" and is thought to be the offspring of "Slick" (J-16).
Deciding who the father is will have to await collection and testing of DNA. In fact, it may be months or years before we can collect enough data to even determine whether J-42 is Male or Female.
This is thought to be fourth calf born to "Slick" (J-16), whose is thought to be 37 years old (Her estimated DOB is 1970). Her other calves are two brothers "Mike" (J-26)DOB 1991, and "Keet" (J-33)DOB 1997, and it is believed that she is also the mother of a third calf "Alki" (J-36)DOB 1999 whose sex has still not been confirmed.
