Gray Whale at Hein Bank! May 21st, 2010.
We headed to Hein Bank this morning looking for Minke Whales and not long after we arrived near the marker we spotted a large blow to the south west, heading east. At first we thought it maybe the Humpback Whale that had been sighted near False Bay a few days ago, but on the third surfacing of the whale we could clearly see that it was in fact a Gray Whale! This was the first time I had seen a Gray Whale at Hein Bank and my first encounter with a Gray Whale this season. We watched the Gray Whale for a while before heading north and heard later that the whale had traveled towards Eastern Bank.
Apart from the Gray Whale we also saw Harbor Porpoise, Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals, Northern Elephant Seals and both California & Steller Sealions during today's tours. Our day ended with a stunning sunset!
