Mother & Calf Humpback Whales! May 22, 2010.
Here are a few images from today's wonderful encounter with a Mother & Calf Humpback Whale near Turn Point!
It is unusual to see Humpback Whales on the West side of San Juan Island, but this is the second time we have encountered Humpback Whales there this season! Only about 8 years ago we hardly ever saw or even heard of Humpback Whales in the Salish Sea, but over the last few years they have made a strong comeback in the area, which is wonderful to see.
We followed the Mother and Calf from a respectful distance as they made their way North towards Moresby Island, with the Calf surfacing much more than the Mother. They probably came into the area to find food as they journey north to the summer feeding grounds of Alaska.
During our tour we also encountered Harbor Porpoise, Bald Eagles and Harbor Seals. On our way home the wind had picked up which made for a fun & thrilling ride across the Victoria waterfront!
