J-pod & a Humpback Whale on Independence Day! July 4th, 2012

What a wonderful way to celebrate American Independence Day with not only Resident Orcas (J-pod) but also a Humpback Whale as well!

We had another nice encounter with J27 "Blackberry" today as we watched him hunting Salmon off-shore of Lime Kiln Lighthouse. J27 has become a supreme hunter and once he latches onto a Salmon they rarely escape. An Orcas needs to eat at least 5-10% of its body weight each day in order to remain healthy so it is important that Resident Orcas learn to catch Salmon in order to survive.

The Humpback Whale was sighted a little north of Lime Kiln heading north along the shore of San Juan Island. This lone animal seemed not in the least interested in the Resident Orcas both north & south of its location.

We also showed our guests a large number of Harbor Seals at the Chain Islets, the young Pups are just starting to appear:)
