J-pod & a Minke Whale near San Juan Island! June 23rd, 2012

Here are some images from our encounters today with J-pod and a Minke Whale near San Juan Island!

The Minke Whale was lunge feeding near our boat and moving slowly south bound. Minke Whales are a Baleen Whale that feed on small fish such as Sand Lance. They reach a maximum length of 35' and weight about 10 tons.

Apart from the Minke Whale encounter we also had a great time watching J-pod, part of the Resident Orca pods of the Southern Resident Killer Whale population. We witnessed some breaching, tail lobbing and high speed Porpoising (high speed swimming).
