Orcas out west! July 28th, 2011
We had heard a report that Orcas had been seen near Port Renfrew at 4.50am heading East towards Victoria and then one of our guests said they seen Orcas near Sooke. So we sent out this important information to the fleet and sure enough just before we headed out on our 10am tour a local fisherman called to say they could see Orcas near Sooke Harbour heading east:)
We caught up with the Orcas at Beacher Bay and soon realized we had J & K-pod with the odd L-pod member (Including L87 "Onyx"! Whilst watching the Orcas we witnessed several spyhops, tail slaps, cartwheels, tail lobs and even a couple of breaches:) Our guests were also lucky enough to have an encounter with K27 "Deadhead" and her 3 weeks old calf, K44!
On our way home we stopped off at Race Rocks MPA and had a nice encounter with Harbour Seals, Steller Sealions and a large Northern Elephant Seal! Race Rocks is one of my favourite places to visit on the west coast of Canada and today's encounters showed why:)
