First SUPERPOD of 2008!!! June 3rd, 2008.

Above and below, first pictures of the new Kpod calf!

All the images above were taken by Ron Bates, Marine Mammal Research Group.

Thanks to Ron and his connections, we first had reports of a large number of Orcas off the west coast of San Juan Islands traveling north from Salmon Bank to Cattle Point. By 10.40am our boat was one of the first on scene and confirmed that we had Jpod and at least part of K & L Pod, our first Superpod of the year! Seeing so many Orcas together for the first time in the year is always a special and exciting time:)

In the afternoon we caught up to the Orcas near Turn Point and observed to main groups of between 25-35 Orcas milling around in the currents near the headland. A vessel from the Center for Whale Research was on scene taking photos for ID purposes, of all the Orcas that were in the area today. This is such an exciting time for our passengers, crew and the local researchers in the area as J, K & L pod came together for the first time in several weeks. We also observed the exciting sight of a new calf in Kpod, providing another reason to celebrate for all who follow the Southern Resident Orcas!

Anyone fortunate to be on the water today will have been left in awe at the sight of so many Orcas traveling closely together!
