Harbor Seal in Victoria Harbor! July 11th, 2009.

Here are a few pictures of a large Harbor Seal I encountered in Victoria Harbor. The size of this Seal would indicate that it may be pregnant, either that or it has been pigging out at Barb's Fish and Chips;) Harbor Seals can reach lengths up to 6' and weigh about 300lbs. They are a favorite prey animal for the Transient Orcas that visit the waters around Victoria. Recently the population of Harbor Seals has grown and this has lead to an increase in the Transient Orca population. We often encounter Harbor Seals during our tours but usually try to keep our distance so as not to disturb the Seals. These pictures were taken from one of the local dock in Victoria Harbor and the Seal seemed very indifferent to the attention it received.
