L41 "Mega" & L-pod off San Juan Island! June 8th, 2010.
We headed out East with our two vessels, Supercat & Fastcat after Ron Bates, MMRG, received reports that members of L-pod were just south of Lime Kiln Whale Park!
As we arrived on scene we i.d. L41 "Mega" and the L12 group moving south towards Eagle Point. Then Mega changed position and started moving south East and then North West, back up island. Soon after we saw a tail slap and breach and the rest of the L12's also changed direction. This form of inter-pod communication is very typical and shows perfectly the structure and organization within a resident Pod.
We also saw one of the young L-pod calfs, that is less than 12 months old, which was a thrill for the passengers and crew.
The sun was out, the seas calm and very active whales, what more could you ask for:)
