Resident Orcas in Haro Strait! July 11, 2013
Here are a few images from today's wonderful encounter with Resident Orcas (J & K-pod) in Haro Strait! We had a very special encounter with J2 "Granny" who Spyhopped and then swam past our boat (just over a 100yards away) as she headed from Canadian waters over to the US side of the Strait! She looked amazing for a 102 year old Gal and she is now the oldest Orcas we have ever known.
The Orcas had first been picked up on the Orca sound hydrophone and they were moving south rapidly. We picked them up spread out from west of Beaumont Shoals to the shoreline of San Juan Island near Hanna Heights. It was wonderful to see over 40 Resident Orcas moving through the strait!
Apart from the Resident Orcas we also got to see a large number of Harbor Seals near the Chain Islets some of them had new born Pups:)
