Afternoon encounter with Humpback Whales & Gray Whale! Aug 21, 2010
Here are a few images from a wonderful afternoon encounter with 2 Humpback Whales and a Gray Whale!
We headed out this afternoon hoping we could encounter the Mother & Calf Humpback Whale that we had found in the morning. Thankfully by the time we headed out the fog had cleared and we were able to catch up with the 2 Humpback Whales a few limes to the south East of Victoria.
The 2 Humpbacks were traveling in a westerly direction once again and as we watched we saw them show off their huge pectoral fins (They can reach a length of a 1/3 to a 1/4 of a Humpbacks length) and impressive tail flukes. A full grown female's tail flukes can measure 16-18 feet across from tip to tip!
We also had a wonderful encounter with our resident Gray Whale and today the Gray was playing around in the kelp bed near Discovery Island:)
