Five for Five Star during an incredible afternoon adventure! Aug 12th, 2010.
Here are a few images from our amazing afternoon adventure where we encountered not one but Five different species of Cetacean, including Resident Orcas & Transient Orcas, a Gray Whale, Harbor Porpoise, 3 Minke Whales and a Humpback Whale!
Our first encounter was with the Transient Orcas (Marine Mammal Eaters) just south of Trial Island. The Orcas were in hunting mode and were moving through the Strait of Juan De Fuca, making a b-line for Race Rocks.
Our second encounter was with the Gray Whale just a little East of Oak Bay. The Gray was feeding in a tide line whilst we were watching and seemed very happy. Earlier we had stopped off at the Chain Islets to show our passengers the Harbor Seals and Pups, plus the large amount of birds there.
Next we encountered not one but three Minke Whales just north of Hein Bank that were actively feeding on the many bait balls (small schooling fish) in the area. One Minke in particular was being very active, lunge feeding and doing tight circles. Just before encountering the Minke Whales we also spotted a number of harbor Porpoise!
Our adventures continued with our encounter with members of L-pod including L5, L54 and L100, ,who breached multiple times just as we arrived on scene. We also witnessed L100 and L54 chasing Salmon!
The finale encounter of the day was just a few minutes after leaving L-pod we saw a large blow from a Humpback Whale several miles to the south of our location. We did not have time for a closer look but the large blow from the Humpback was clear for all to see.
This afternoon was one of those very special days on the water and we could not have asked for a better trip. Great Whales, great weather and great people, what more could you ask for:)
