Afternoon trip on Fastcat with JPod near Pile Point, June 8th 2007.

J22 "Oreo" Spyhopping

J42 the new calf with mother J16 "Slick"

Porpoising Orca.

We set out this afternoon on Fastcat and caught up with JPod near Pile Point. Our passengers got to see the new calf J42 within minutes of arriving on scene and everyone was thrilled to see this playful young girl. The Pod was milling about and changing direction frequently, which indicated they were hunting for Salmon. Sure enough we soon spotted J30 "Riptied" chasing a Salmon and once an Orca has a Salmon in its sights then the Salmon has no chance

We also got to see a beautiful spy hop by J22 "Oreo" close by our boat, much to the delight of our passengers. Several members of J Pod were also seen Porpoising, which is when an Orca partially leaps out of the water during rapid swimming. Orcas can reach speads up to 20 kts!
