Humpback Whales and Transient Orcas. Aug 12th 2007.

Elephant Seal takes a peak at our passengers:)

Transient Orcas near Trail Island (T101, T101A, T101B, and T102)

Stellar Sealions swimming at Race Rocks, possibly spooked by the presence of Transient Orcas nearby.

As can be seen from the pictures above, we saw at least 4 Elephant Seals at Race Rocks either on the rocks or in the water.

This family of River Otters were spotted in the inner harbor.

Our Marine Adventure began today right in the inner harbor as a family of River Otters was spotted by Marine Naturalist Merina! This was just the beginning of another wonderful day in the Juan De Fuca Strait as we headed out to Race Rocks to see the abundance of wildlife this Protected Ecosystem has to offer. We were not disappointed with sightings of numerous harbor Seals, four Large Elephant Seals (both on dry land and in the water) and several Stellar and California Sealions, including a dozen Stellars Swimming in the water near Race Rocks possibly.

Just after departing Race Rocks we came upon a Humpback Whale that thrilled our passengers with an impressive Tail Fluke just as we arrived. We stayed on scene with this Large Marie Mammal for quite some time before moving East in search of more amazing Marine Mammals, Transient Orcas!

We found at least 5 Transient Orcas (T101, T101A, T101B, and T102) near Trial Island heading East and watched these top predators glide smoothly and silently in the water in search of prey. Whilst we were on scene we did notice at least two sudden direction changes which may have indicated the Orcas had tracked down some prey, but we saw no evidence on the surface of a kill. Still, it was fascinating to watch these supreme hunters at work.
