Lpod near Trial Island and Eagle Point. Aug 7th 2007.

These pictures of the Pacific White-sided Dolphin was taken by one of our passengers, Mr. Barrs, who is the Father of Marine Naturalist Jac. Great Job!

This Pacific White-sided Dolphin was sighted near San Juan Islands and played in the bow wave of our vessel. It is rare to find these mammals in the local waters as they are usually found further North.

Passengers in our cabin relax after another excellent adventure on the water.

The pictures above are of members of Lpod including L22 "Spirit", L12 "Alexis", L79 "Skana", L87 "Onyx", L85 "Mystery" and L89 "Solstice", off the West Coast of San Juan Island.

The pictures above and below show a Mother and Seal Pup swimming in the water and another Mother with her Pup feeding.

We set out early today in search of our Southern Resident Orcas and soon came across members of Lpod near Trial Island. The group included L22 "Spirit", L12 "Alexis", L79 "Skana", L85 "Mystery" and L89 "Solstice" and when we first arrived they were in resting mode. We followed this group all by ourselves until midway into Haro Strait and watched three Spyhops as the group began to wake up and become more active.

As other boats arrived on scene we left the Orcas and headed over to the Chain Islands to see the many Seals and Seal Pups and we were not disappointed as we saw several Mother and Pups, both in the water and on the rocks. We also saw a number of Cormorants and even a Great Blue Heron. It was a cracking start to what proved to be another spectacular day on the water.

In the afternoon we found these same members of Lpod near Eagle Point and we were one of only three boats on scene. We watched several of the Orcas make some close passes and also watched one Orca Kelping (Playing with a piece of Kelp), which was a real thrill for our passengers. However, the highlight was when we spotted a Pacific White Sided Dolphin playing nearby the Orcas and then came right by the bow of our boat, it was a breathtaking spectacle. Pacific White Sided Dolphins are rarely seen in these waters so it was a real fortunate find.

On the way home we saw a number of Harbor Porpoises, and then a lone Bald Eagle near Trial Island.

Today once again provided another glimpse at the diversity of wildlife in the Salish Sea!
