Superpod & Transients!! Aug 19th 2007.

The pictures above and below show the new Lpod calf L110. This calf is just a few days old and was born to L83.

Superpod again today after all three of our pods returned to our waters! Our tours were delayed due to thick fog but we headed out at 12.30pm and 2.00pm towards Haro Strait and soon met up with all 3 of our Southern Resident Pods heading North East.

We had J and K pod travelling in close proximity and Lpod trailing a little further to the south. One of the most exciting moments of the tour is when we saw the Whale Research vessel from the Centre for Whale Research and on board was Ken Belcombe obviously looking for pictures of the new Lpod calf L110. Sure enough after a few minutes L110 popped up along with mother L83! It was incredibly exciting to see this new Lpod calf and I did manage to get some great pictures, please see above. For more information about the new calf please visit the Centre for Whale Research, the link to the website is on the righthand side of this webpage.

Later on in the tour we were following Lpod towards the west coast of San Juan Island when all of a sudden we started seeing breaches by several Lpod members. I counted at least 25 breaches in the space of about 15 minutes and several Orcas breached simultaneously!!!!! It was a very rare and breathtaking spectacle and one I personally will remember for a long time.

On our way home we then came across another Orca, this time it was T14 "Pender" a very famous Transient Orca (marine mammal eater). We found Pender near Discovery Island, probably after checking out the Harbor Seals at nearby Chain Islands. Whilst we were on scene we saw some Harbor Porpoises and Harbor Seals nearby, two mammals that are a favourite prey for transients.

I will be posting more pictures shortly.
