Southern Resident Orcas! Aug 9th, 2008.

Although all our tours today were sold out, at Five Star Whale Watching we believe in quality over quantity and today all our passengers were treated to spectacular tours with the Southern Resident Orcas!

The day began off False bay with Jpod and 6 members of Lpod, including L57 "Faith", who have been hanging out with Jpod for several days now. It was an enjoyable morning as we watched the Orcas foraging and socializing as they moved up and down the shoreline off San Juan Island.

In the afternoon we headed to Eagle Point and had an awesome time watching various Orcas including J1 "Ruffles", J2 "Granny", J28 "Polaris" and J8 "Spieden" in resting mode. We also saw J16 "Slick" along with her offspring, J42 (JPods newest member born in May 2007), J26 "Mike", J33 "Keet" and J36 "Alki". We also observed a number of Breaches and spyhops this afternoon.

During our evening tour the Orcas were again near Eagle Point and when we arrived on scene we could hear a lot of vocalization through our underwater hydrophone. Listening to Orcas in the wild vocalizing is one of the greatest thrill one can experience! Once again we observed a lot of foraging as the Orcas hunted and fed on Salmon.

As we were watching the Orcas a Minke Whale also zipped past our boat, which was a real treat and extra bonus for our passengers:)

It was an unforgettable day and one capped off with a magnificent sunset!
