T14 "Pender"! Aug 16th, 2008.

The picture above and below is of a Hybrid Porpoise.

The first 9 pictures above were taken by Ron bates, MMRG.

Today we encountered one of the most famous Transient Orcas, T14 "Pender", a male born in 1964. Pender is one of my favorite Transient Orcas and it is always a thrill when we encounter this supreme Ocean predator! T14 is the Transient Orca that was radio collared in 1976 and still has the scars to show from this very invasive procedure. As a result of this researcher Ron Bates, MMRG, and researcher Colin Baird, devised a non-invasive suction cup technique that allows for temporary tagging and tracking of Orcas.

During our evening trip we caught up with Pender near Coal harbor and watched as he played around the kelp beds. Despite seeing a number of Harbor Seals in the water nearby we did not see a kill, much to the relief of many of the passengers though some would have enjoyed the spectacle of a kill;)

As we ventured home the sky was ablaze with color as the sun went down on the horizon to end another exciting adventure!
