Amazing morning Superpod encounter!!! Sept 18th, 2008.

If you look closely at the picture above and in several of the images below you can see the small Harbor Porpoise Calf.

Here are just a few amazing images from this mornings encounter with Superpod (all three resident pods), as we watched them Porpoise, forage and socialize. We were very fortunate enough to watch the Orcas hunt a large 20lb Chinook Salmon near our vessel. As we watched we could see the Salmon dart through the water trying to escape and the thrashing of the Orcas in hot pursuit, it was an awesome sight:)

We also watched a breathtaking encounter between 4 Orcas (2 mother & calf pairings) and a Harbor Porpoise Calf! We watched the 4 members of Lpod interact with this small Harbor Porpoise for over 20 minutes and all on board were stunned by what we saw. The Orcas seemed to be trying to help the Harbor Porpoise to the surface on several occasions and we even saw one of the females lift the Porpoise out of the water using her Melon!

As we left the Orcas and Harbor Porpoise we contemplated on what an astonishing experience we has just witnessed and how fortunate we were to be the only boat on scene on such a rare and magical encounter:)
