New Transient Orca Calf!!!! September 1st, 2008.

New Transient Orca Calf, just a few days old:)

WOW........ what an incredible start to September with an spectacular encounter with the T30's, T45's, T100's and T10's today which included a brand new Calf only a few days old!!!

We set out in the morning and headed towards Sidney Spit after receiving reports that Transient Orcas had been sighted in the area. When we arrived on scene Ron Bates, MMRG, soon identified the T10 and T100 group of Transient Orcas. We followed the 2 groups (mostly the T100's) as they patrolled the nearby islands, possibly in search of Harbor Seals.

In the afternoon the Transients had moved south along the Saanich Peninsula and we picked them up West of Darcy Island. We had earlier heard that a new calf had been spotted amongst the T10 group and not long after we arrived we sighted the new Calf moving with the older Orcas plus a couple of youngsters, it was a breathtaking sight! As we were getting our first glimpse of this brand new Calf we witnessed a number of tailslaps, leaps, backflips and other remarkable behavior that looked as if the Orcas were celebrating this new member of their clan:)

To see such a young Transient Calf is a remarkable experience and to watch this little Orca who was only around 7' (new born Orcas weight approx 600 lbs) was magical. What a fantastic start to the month of September!
