Transient Orcas and the return of the Southern Resident Orcas!! Sept 7th, 2008.

We set out this afternoon and headed south of Race Rocks where we encountered the T30 and T 46 group of Transient Orcas. The Orcas were surrounding a Harbor Seal that was lying on a Kelp Bed and obviously the older Orcas were trying to teach the youngsters how to kill the poor hapless seal! We watched them come closer and closer for over an hour but the Harbor Seal stayed on the Kelp Bed. When it looked like the Orcas were finally going to go in for the kill they were suddenly distracted, probably as they heard vocalizations from the Resident Orcas as they moved inbound after spending several days out West. The harbor Seal took this opportunity to make its escape:)

On our way to the Residents we stopped off at Race Rocks to look at the various Harbor Seals, Stellar and California Sealions and Northern Elephant Seals that can be found at this MPA.

We then headed towards Beacher Bay and encountered Jpod with members of Lpod moving swiftly towards the East. It was great to see the Residents again and we saw several tail slaps and even breaching.

With the clear blue skies and calm seas it was yet another beautiful day to be on the water and September continues to be a wonderful month for Whale Watching!
