Humpbacks, Orcas & Lags in the morning! Sept 9th, 2010

Here are a few images from this mornings wonderful adventure with Humpback Whales, Resident Orcas and Pacific White-Sided Dolphins also known as Lags!

We had heard a report from Victoria Harbour Patrol that a large number of Orcas had been sighted off Victoria heading East. So we headed out this morning with a boat full of excited passengers confident that we were going to have a fun trip, but we had no idea just how incredible it would turn out! As we headed out of the harbour our Captain, Trev, thought he saw a large blow to the south, so we decided to investigate in case it was a Humpback Whale. It actually turned out to be 2 Humpback Whales in close formation:) What a wonderful start to the trip!

After watching these 2 large Baleen Whales for a while we made our way over to the Orcas but on the way eagle eyed Cpt. Trev spotted what we first thought were Dall's Porpoise but actually turned out to be Pacific White-Sided Dolphins (Lags), a rare find indeed:) The Lags played in our bow & stern wave for a while and thrilled both passengers and crew!

Then we made our way over to the Resident (fish eaters) Orcas and realized we had members of all three pods close to Discovery Island, it was just an incredible experience to be out there this morning:)
