Humpback Whale and 2 groups of Transient Orcas. Oct 1st 2007

What a start to the month of October!

We set out this morning in calm seas and within a 30 minutes of leaving the harbor I caught sight of the first Whale of the day, a Humpback Whale. The Humpback was in resting mode which made it even harder to find but we enjoyed watching the Whale slowly come to the surface.

As we were watching the Humpback reports came in that a group of Transient Orcas had been sighted not far away so off we went. We picked up the Transients and could see there was a group of about 5 or 6 Orcas including a young calf.
After spending some time watching these supreme hunters we headed towards Discovery Island in search of Dalls Porpoise and just as we headed along the Eastern side of the island I spotted a second group of Transient Orcas, what a coup!! The Transients made their way towards Discovery obviously searching for Harbor Seals in the Kelp beds.
In the afternoon we headed to Darcy Island to again watch this second group of Transient Orcas. On the way we came across a very playful group of Dalls Porpoise that were bow riding at the front of the boat and really put on a show. Then we continued on to Darcy Island where we caught up with the transient Orcas. We observed them travel past Darcy searching out for possibly more Harbor Seals. During our time watching the Transients we had a wonderful pass by a mother and her calf about 100meters from our boat, it was breathtaking!

On our way home we stopped off at the Chain Islands and saw several Harbor Seals, a favourite food of Transient Orcas, Harlequin Ducks and Cormorants.
