When we left the inner harbor this afternoon we knew it was going to be a bit of a trek before we encountered the Orcas as they were near Partridge Point not far from the entrance to Puget Sound. Just over an hour later, thanks to the skill of our skipper Trev, we arrived on scene! Apart from two other boats we were the only boat on scene and the only Canadian Whale Watching boat.
The trip here was well worth the time as we could see Orcas in every direction as once again we had Superpod, meaning almost 90 whales in the area. We got to see some amazing interaction, as well as a lot of foraging, spyhops, tailslaps and pectoral waves. The Orcas from J, K & Lpod were being very vocal throughout our time on scene and with our hydrophone in the water we could clearly hear their calls and the clicks as they used Eco location to find Salmon.
The highlight for the passengers and crew were a number of breaches seen not far from our boat. It was a spectacular sight seeing an Orca that when full grown can weight between 7-10 tons, throw itself clear of the water with seemingly little effort!
After a breathtaking experience with the Southern Resident Orcas we headed home back towards Victoria. We decided to head towards Constance bank to see if we could find one of the many Humpback Whales that have been hanging around there. Sure enough as we neared Constance Bank we saw a Humpback Whale Tailfluke in the distance as it went on a deep dive. What a bonus for our passengers, first they get to see a Superpod and then a large Baleen Humpback Whale!
What a magnificent day to be on the water, with magical colours in the ocean making it look like Mercury and a spectacular skyline! Once again October has come up trumps and provided another memorable trip.
