J & L Pod plus Transient Orcas!!! Oct 7th 2007.

Although we had reports of Transient Orcas near Trial Island, we headed out West today in search of J and L Pod after hearing they were sighted near Otter Point. Our risk paid off as J pod and L pod were sighted East of Otter Point heading inbound and so we found ourselves being the only boat in the area watching over 50 resident Orcas!

Both J pod and L pod were in resting mode and slowly making their way towards Race Rocks. We saw both the new Jpod calf J42 swimming with her mother J16 "Slick" and the newest Lpod calf L110, swimming with L83 "Moonlight". L54 "Ino" swam by with her claf L108 who was born in 2006.
After spending some quality time with J and Lpod we headed over to Race Rocks to enjoy the sight of several pinnepeds including Harbor Seals, Stellar Sealions, California Sealions and a lone female Elephant Seal.
We then discovered that the Transient Orcas had travelled towards Esquimalt Harbor so on our way home we stopped by to observe these supreme predators. Not long after we arrived there was signs of a kill being made underwater and several Gulls could be seen picking scraps off from the surface. One of the female Orcas then made a spectacular spyhop close to our boat, to provide a very memorable end to another amazing day on the water.
