Humpback Whales and Transient Orcas! Oct 21st, 2007.

We set out in clear skies and flat calm conditions this afternoon in search of Humpback Whales that had been reported near Constance Bank.

As we travelled south across the Juan De Fuca Strait we received word of Transient Orcas being sighted near Haystack. We arrived on scene to find the T140's together patrolling the shore line possibly in search of Harbor Seals. Included in this group was a couple of calfs, one of which looked a few weeks old. At first the group travelled North along the shoreline and were heading towards Esquimalt, before shifting direction 180 deg's and travelling south towards Race Rocks.

After spending time watching the Transients we headed to Race Rocks and observed the Stellar and California Sealions as well as the Harbor Seals. On the way over to Race Rocks we also spotted two Bald Eagles.

We then headed out towards Constance bank to see if we could pick up the 2 Humpback Whales that had been reported nearby. Sure enough it was not long before the first one popped up, much to our delight. We saw this animal do several nice tailflukes as it went on a deep dive. As we were watching this one animal a second Humpback Whale broke the surface in the distance to take a breath, before it also did a deep dive.

This has got to be one of the best Octobers on record and these incredible trips show no sign of stopping.
