TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2009, J-POD Returns
TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2009, J-POD OFF SAN JUAN ISLAND
After breaking their absence of over 30 days, J-Pod returned for a second day of spectacular viewing. In the space of 21-hours (from 4PM on Monday to 1PM on Tuesday), J-Pod swam over 120km (75 miles). This may seem startling, and it is until you realize that Killer Whales (Orcinus Orca) cover that kind of distance, on average, each and every day of their lives!
Highlights included J-1 Ruffles``, the largest (9m or 30 feet long, and close to 9 tonnes) and oldest Male (58-yrs-old) in J-pod; J-30 `Riptide`, a 14-yr-old Male showing signs of tremendous growth over the Winter; and J-14 Samish, a 25-yr-old with Female with new calf J-45.
