J-pod near Pender Bluffs! June 13th, 2012
Here are a few images from this today's encounter with J-pod, part of our Resident Orcas pods, near Pender Bluffs! Resident Orcas feed primarily on the large Chinook Salmon that are heading to the Fraser River to spawn. The Orcas will follow the Salmon the the mouth of the Fraser River and then turn around and search until they find more Salmon. It is for this reason that Orcas have been recorded traveling up to 100 miles in a 24 hour period, which is amazing.
We caught up with the Orcas today near Pender Island, as they made their way north towards the Fraser River. The Orcas were moving swiftly as they traveled up the side of Pender Island. We did see tail slaps, pectoral waves and a spyhop!
