J-pod near Stuart Island in the morning! June 10th, 2012

This morning we received reports at 8am that Orcas had been spotted near East Point heading west into Boundary Passage. By the time we arrived on scene after departing the dock at 10am, the Orcas were already south of Stewart Island. We soon identified the Orcas as Resident Orcas and in particular they were J-pod!

Not long into our encounter we saw one of the Orca breach 3 times in a row, a breathtaking sight:) To breach and Orca needs to reach a speed of 20 miles per hour and can attain this speed within three flicks of its tail, which is amazing.

As we continued to observe the Orcas we witnessed them high speed porpoising (high speed swimming) in a southerly direction along the west side of San Juan Island. By the time we left them, some of the Orcas were already approaching Andrew’s Bay!
