Afternoon encounter with L-pod! Sept 11th, 09.

This afternoon we ventured to Hein Bank where we caught up with members of L-pod. We could see the pod was spread out between Salmon Bank and Hein as they foraged for Salmon.

Whilst we watched the Orcas we saw one female begun to roll on its back and then tail lobbed several times, it was stunning to watch! We also saw several tail slaps and amazing cartwheels as the orcas began to play.

As one group went through a patch of Kelp we could see a male playing with the Kelp, an activity called Kelping. Orcas have very sensitive skin and will often pick up a piece of Kelp and play with it.

On our way home we stopped at the Chain Islets to show our passengers the countless sea birds and Harbor Seals, and so ended another adventure on the Salish Sea!
