Am trip with Ruffles, Granny & J-pod! Aug 29th, 09.

This morning we had a wonderful encounter with Sealions at Race Rocks and then J1 "Ruffles. J2 "Granny" and the rest of J-pod off Lime Kiln. We also identified two members of L-pod swimming with J-pod, L7 "Canuck" a female born in 1961 and her daughter L53 "Lulu" born in 1977.

J1 "Ruffles" is the oldest male in the Southern Resident Orcas and is believed to have been born in 1951, making him 58 years old! The average lifespan for a male is between 30 to 40 years old, so J1 is doing very well. J2 "Granny" is the oldest female in the Southern Resident Orcas and believed to have been born in 1911, making her almost 100 years old! The average lifespan for females is 50 to 60 years old, so J2 is well over average age and is one of the oldest Orcas ever known. She is believed to be the mother of J1 and they are mostly seen swimming in very close proximity.

As we watched J-pod pass by we could see a number Salmon jumping in the air nearby!
