FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2009, Afternoon Cruise, Killer Whales spread over 4 square miles near Hein Bank

By early afternoon K & L pods of Southern Resident Killer Whales were headed off-shore away from San Juan Island and out towards Hein Bank. They then spread out over a very wide range and fed on Salmon.

As we reached late afternoon, the skies darkened and the winds began to pick....Totally the opposite of what Environment Canada had predicted. Welcome to the World of Weather Forecating on the West Coast where we have three mountain ranges in close proximity and slight changes in wind direction determine whether inclement weather goes on the far side of a mountain and misses us, or we get a direct hit.

We witnessed the power of these Orcas as they accelerated into high-speed swimming (Referred to as "Porpoising") and cruised through moderately high seas.
