SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 2009, Morning Trip, Race Rocks Marine Protected Area & J Pod of Resident (Fish-Eating) Killer Whales in Haro Strait

So, they say, this is how it works: Every morning we make our decision on which direction to head based on the best available information. This morning we headed to Race Rocks Marine Protected Area (MPA) because we had no early reports of whales to the East, and we knew that there were many sea lions at Race Rocks. As sea lions are one of the favorite foods of Transient (Marine-Mammal-Eating) Killer Whales, and if the Southern Resident (Fish-Eating) Whales weren't off to the East, then they had likely heading out to the mouth of the Pacific Ocean looking for fish.

As we were viewing sea lions at Race Rocks we got a report that J pod of Resident Killer Whales was found to the North.

Note: We never did find K or L pods of Resident Killer Whales today. Maybe tomorrow.
