Spectacular evening encounter with the Southern Residents! Aug 24th, 09.
Here are a few images from this evenings spectacular encounter with the Southern Residents! We headed out this evening on a special charter with some great people and little did we realize just what an amazing encounter we would have with members of L & K-pod near Hein Bank.
Our adventure began with L78 "Gaia", a male born in 1989, and his sister L88 "Wavewalker", born in 1993. They were a few miles West of the main group of Orcas and we watched them foraging for Salmon.
Next we came across L72 "Racer", a female born in 1986, her son L105 "Fluke" a male born in 2004 and Racer's brother L95 "Nigel" a male born in 1996. These Orcas were first seen high-speed porpoising through the Strait. Porpoising is one of the most dramatic of Orca behavior as they launch most of their body out of the water as they travel at tremendous speed!
Our final encounter of the evening was with K21 "Cappuccino", a male born in 1986. We also got some dramatic views of K-pod with Mt.Baker as a stunning backdrop!
What an unforgettable evening on the water:)
