Sept 2nd PM - Resident Orcas off San Juan!

Sept 2nd PM – Resident Orcas off San Juan Island

Orca Whale Watching off San Juan Island
Resident Orcas
This afternoon we encountered Resident Orcas off San Juan Island! We heard late in he morning that Resident Orcas had been spotted off the west side of San Juan Island so that is where we headed for our 2pm tour. The Orcas were spread out over a wide area doing lots of foraging (hunting for Salmon). We did get to see a fantastic breach though, which thrilled our passengers :)
Resident Orcas use their sophisticated biological sonar called Eco-location to hunt for Salmon and it is believed they need to find approximately 10% of their body weight of Salmon each day. Resident Orcas specialize in feeding on Chinook Salmon, the largest Salmon to be found in the Pacific Northwest. The west side of San Juan Island is a popular spot for the Orcas to hunt for Salmon.
